Recycling · Pass Down Program

When repair is not an option, keep it out of the landfill

Since 1986 our mission has been to keep gear in circulation. The Pass Down Program takes it a step further: industrial-level recycling for end-of-life technical gear, in partnership with Material Return, LLC.

How it works

  1. Start a recycling order. Fill in your contact details online and print the slip. On the live site you prepay the $6 per item by card, so nothing needs to be written on paper.
  2. Send in your gear. Mail rainwear, skiwear or old fishing waders to Rainy Pass Repair. Write RECYCLE on the outside of the box.
  3. All done. We email you when your item has been received and recycled.

What can be recycled

  • Waterproof-breathable fabrics, including delaminated materials
  • Synthetic technical fabrics
  • Damaged, torn or otherwise unrepairable textiles

Why it matters

We bring industrial-level recycling to our customers for end-of-life technical gear, giving new purpose to fabrics that have been traditionally difficult to recycle. Together we can make better choices for a better planet.

Textiles and cleaners

As GORE-TEX® fabric specialists we understand the importance of performance technologies. We clean and reuse fabric and materials from recycled or abandoned garments, which lets us use raw materials not available to the public and greatly reduces the waste we and our warranty partners produce. All in-house laundering products are Revivex, 100% free of forever chemicals; our DWR is PFAS-free.

Pass Down Program questions

What can be recycled?

Gear and garments that are functionally no longer usable: waterproof-breathable fabrics including delaminated materials, synthetic technical fabrics, and damaged, torn or otherwise unrepairable textiles.

What does it cost?

A flat fee of $6 per item, which covers processing and recycling. You pay inbound shipping.

What happens to my gear?

We carefully disassemble each item, sort the materials and remove non-recyclable trims and components. The fabric goes to Material Return to be fiberized and repurposed into a new raw material stream, such as dog bedding from high-quality synthetic fibers and automotive insulation from waterproof fibers.

I sent something for repair and it cannot be fixed. Now what?

If you decide not to repair and do not want to pay return shipping, we recycle the item at no charge.
